The Rizek family first planted cacao in 1944, having immigrated from Palestine in 1905. Originally a small plantation also growing coffee they have grown into one of the larger exporters of cacao in all of the Caribbean.
The Dominican Republic has import restrictions on genetic material in an attempt to ward off the possibility of decease. Frosty Pod and Which’s Broom devastated South and Central American cacao throughout the 20th century.
Genetic diversity is largely limited to what was originally planted, predominately by France in the 17th century.
